I grew up in Brantford, Ontario, where I always felt a deep connection to nature. My childhood was filled with activity as I participated in various sports such as swimming, dance, track, volleyball, and rugby, but my greatest passion was fast pitch softball. I played competitively from a young age and was obsessed with the game! Riding my bike with my baseball tee slung over the handlebars, I would head to the nearby baseball diamond to perfect my swing. This dedication paid off, allowing me to be part of several Canadian national championship-winning teams, including the Guelph Gators and Brampton Blazers. I was thrilled to earn a softball scholarship to Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, becoming the only Canadian recruited for their team.
Alongside my love for softball, I was equally passionate about becoming a doctor. I was determined to pursue this path, and when I wasn't on the field, I spent my time studying or volunteering at the local nursing home. My curiosity about the human body drove me to learn everything I could about its functions, what happens when it doesn't work properly, and how I could support healing. With a natural empathy for others, I wanted to help them feel better. It wasn't until I was pursuing my Master of Public Health (MPH) that I discovered the naturopathic medical program at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM). This program felt like the perfect fit for me, as it combined medical knowledge of the body with a focus on natural healing methods, utilizing the wisdom of nature. It aligned beautifully with the preventative health principles I was learning in my master's program and allowed me to return to Canada after nearly a decade in the U.S.!
Many people may not realize that the naturopathic medical program is incredibly rigorous. Students are tasked with mastering physiology (how the body functions in health), pathophysiology (the science of disease), and various naturopathic treatment options. I vividly remember one exam week when we had 17 exams in just one week! Beyond the knowledge gained, it was the philosophy of care that struck a chord with me: the inherent ability of the body to heal itself (the VIS) and the role of naturopathic doctors as supporters of this vital force through natural healing. We aim to create an environment conducive to healing and wellness, optimizing health and vitality gently and effectively, using lifestyle support, herbs, vitamins, and minerals as needed. Our goal is to assist patients in identifying barriers to their health, such as stress, food insecurity, or poor sleep, and collaborate on ways to mitigate these challenges. While we respect allopathic medical treatments, we also ensure referrals to family doctors when necessary, aspiring to prevent disease and disorder before they take hold.
This philosophy continues to resonate with me deeply. The longer I practice as a naturopathic doctor, the more I am amazed at the healing power within us and the remarkable transformations that occur when we address obstacles to our vitality. I feel honored to spend my days in this capacity, and after 15 years, I feel as though I am just now coming into my stride, connected to my patients and the natural world while remaining humbled by the ongoing learning opportunities.
These experiences and choices have shaped my journey to becoming the naturopathic doctor I am today. We all have our own stories, and I appreciate you taking the time to read about my journey. I look forward to hearing your story and meeting you as both a person and a patient. Rest assured, I will apply my knowledge, expertise, and experience to support you on your path to optimal health and vitality.
